Removing age spots with a laser
Introduction
Age spots, also known as lentigines, are benign pigment disorders of the skin that occur more frequently with age. The most effective method for treating these spots is the use of lasers. In this article, we will explain how our laser treatment works and introduce the different types of lasers that can be used to remove age spots.
Advantages of laser treatment
Laser treatment offers numerous advantages when removing age spots. Firstly, it is extremely precise and targeted, which means that only the affected areas of skin are treated. This protects the surrounding tissue. In addition, laser treatment is gentle and painless. It can be carried out almost risk-free and often achieves excellent results.
Possible laser options
Various options are available for the laser treatment of age spots. These include the q-switched Nd:YAG laser (Spectra laser) and the Pico laser. Ablative lasers can also be used for raised age spots (seborrhoeic keratoses).
As the name suggests, age spots are often associated with general skin ageing, so it often makes sense to combine rejuvenation procedures.
We have a broad portfolio of skin boosters (PRP or Philart), light treatments such as LED red light and Kleresca Skin Rejuvenation, as well as fractionated laser and radio frequency treatments.
Here is an overview table comparing the different laser options:
Laser option | Area of application | Costs |
Spectra laser | Removal of age spots | 400-600 CHF (depending on the extent) for one treatment |
Pico Laser | Wide range of applications | 400-600 CHF (depending on the extent) for one treatment |
Hand rejuvenation incl. Nd:YAG laser | Proven method for hand removal with simultaneous skin renewal | 850 CHF for three treatments |
How many sessions are required?
The removal of age spots usually only requires one session. After four weeks, we arrange a follow-up consultation with renewed photo documentation. If the age spots have not faded sufficiently, a second treatment is carried out, which is included in the price. Complete removal is not always successful, but the patient is usually very satisfied with the result. It is rare that the treatment goal cannot be achieved.
Healing process
A careful healing process is required after laser treatment. This includes proper care of the treated skin areas and avoiding exposure to the sun. The skin may become temporarily reddened after treatment and dark brown discoloration and slight crusting may occur. These symptoms usually disappear without scarring after about 10 days. Effective sun protection is essential throughout the healing process and beyond to prevent age spots from forming again.
FAQ - Frequently asked questions
Who is a suitable candidate for laser treatment?
- Laser treatment to remove age spots is generally suitable for people who actually have age spots and no malignant lesions or moles. Ideally, the skin should be healthy and have no open wounds or inflammation.
How do I prepare for the laser treatment?
- Before laser treatment, it is important to protect your skin and minimize possible complications. Avoid direct sunlight and use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor to protect your skin from UV rays. Tell us about any medications, allergies or skin conditions you may have. You may also be advised to avoid certain skin care products before treatment.
Are there alternative treatment options?
- Yes, there are alternative treatment options for removing age spots. One option is to use bleaching creams that can lighten the brownish pigment. These creams usually contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, azelaic acid or kojic acid.
