Symptoms

Hair loss symptoms

The classic symptom of hair loss is - unsurprisingly - excessive hair loss. However, hair growth disorders can manifest themselves earlier in the form of reduced hair quality. Thin, brittle, but also dull, colorless hair can be the first signs of hair loss. However, hair loss is only diagnosed when more than 100 hairs are lost per day. However, a daily loss of up to 100 hairs is normal.

Causes

Hair loss causes

Not all hair loss is the same; the causes and the form in which it occurs can vary greatly. The causes are well researched in dermatology, and here you will find the most common forms of hair loss and the underlying causes:

  • Hereditary hair loss (alopecia androgenetica) is the most common form of hair loss. In men, it usually begins with a receding hairline at the temples and/or thin hair at the top of the head. In women, thinning hair can be observed in this case, especially in the crown area.
  • If bald patches develop on the head, this is known as circular hair loss (alopecia areata).
  • Diffuse hair loss (alopecia diffusa) occurs when hair falls out all over the head.

Frequently asked questions

Hair loss Frequently asked questions

How do you recognize hair loss?

Hair loss can often be recognized by more hair getting caught in the strainer after washing or in the brush after combing. Thinning with a wider parting, receding hairline, shining through of the scalp or smaller hair plait diameter are signs of hair loss. This can occur without accompanying symptoms such as itching or dandruff. In the case of acute hair loss, the hair sometimes comes out in clumps. It is important to clarify this quickly.

What can you do against hair loss? Which vitamins or foods help against hair loss?

First of all, the cause of the hair loss must be determined. There are several reasons for both localized hair loss and diffuse hair loss. It is therefore important that this is carefully clarified, otherwise the therapy will not work. Once the cause has been determined, a treatment plan is drawn up. There are also ways to stop the progression of hair loss in the case of congenital hair loss (androgenetic alopecia). Many vitamins and trace elements are important for hair growth. A deficiency of biotin, iron and zinc, for example, can inhibit hair growth and cause hair loss. However, caution is required here, as an oversupply also has disadvantages for the body. It is therefore important to have a blood test to identify a deficiency and treat it in a targeted manner.
