The summer vacations are just around the corner. Many people head for the sun to relax after a busy time and develop a beautiful complexion. However, proper sun protection is crucial to protect against the side effects of sun exposure. Undesirable consequences include sunburn, age spots, accelerated skin aging and even skin cancer in bad, long-term cases.

Soaking up the sun is considered the epitome of relaxation and well-being, especially when combined with cozy music or the sounds of the beach and nature. Sunlight has been scientifically proven to have several positive effects on the human body. For example, under the influence of sunlight, the skin produces more vitamin D, which has a hormonal effect, strengthens the immune and nervous systems and can even help against mood disorders. UV radiation, especially UVB radiation, also produces the color pigment melanin under the skin. The UVA rays cause the melanin to react with blood oxygen, resulting in a brownish coloration of the pigment. The result is a brown, healthy-looking complexion.

In addition to the positive effects, one should be aware of the dangers of sun exposure. While short-wave UVB rays act in the upper skin area, long-wave UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin and stress the elastic connective tissue. Even at low levels of UV radiation, they damage the genetic material of the cells (DNA), which is normally corrected by the repair system of the cells. However, with frequent, long and intense UV radiation, these repair systems become overloaded and the DNA is no longer repaired without error. This causes sunburn, age spots, faster skin aging and increases the risk of skin cancer.

That is why it is important to always protect yourself optimally from the sun's rays. Before each exposure to the sun, apply a sunscreen in the form of a cream or spray, which will effectively protect you from UVA and UVB rays. Make sure that the sun protection factor is adapted to your skin type. A higher sun protection factor is recommended for light skin types.
