Symptoms

Cellulite symptoms

Cellulite, often colloquially referred to as "orange peel skin," is a common skin condition that manifests as a wavy, uneven skin texture and a visible prominence in certain areas of the body such as the thighs, buttocks, arms and abdomen. It is caused by strands of connective tissue that pull through the fat layer in the skin, creating a surface that resembles the peel of an orange.

Cellulite occurs in most women during their lifetime and is much more common in women than in men. It is estimated that cellulite affects 85% to 98% of all women.

Despite its widespread occurrence, cellulite was not considered an aesthetic "problem" until the 20th century. In earlier times, it was considered more of a natural phenomenon and not disturbing or unattractive.

It is important to emphasize that cellulite does not pose any health risks. It is a natural condition associated mainly with genetic factors, hormone levels and age. Nevertheless, in a culture that idealizes smooth and "flawless" skin, the presence of cellulite can cause changes in body image and insecurities for many women.

Causes

Cellulite causes

The formation of cellulite is a complex process that is influenced by several factors. A decisive role is played by the weakness of the connective tissue and the changes in the fatty tissue. The connective tissue septa between the fat cells expand and pull the skin inward, creating the typical wavy appearance. In women, the fibers in the connective tissue run parallel and are more elastic than in men, which can contribute to the development of cellulite.

Excess weight is another important factor in the development of cellulite. An increased proportion of fat cells can lead to their increased penetration through the connective tissue. Even women of normal body weight can be affected by cellulite, especially if they have a lack of physical exercise and muscle mass is reduced while the fat percentage remains relatively high. A genetic predisposition may also play a role, as people with congenital connective tissue weakness are more prone to cellulite.

Treatment

Cellulite treatment

The treatment of cellulite aims to improve the appearance and reduce the expression. An important measure is to integrate regular physical activity and sports into everyday life. By strengthening the muscles and promoting blood and lymph flow, natural lipolysis can be supported. Sports such as walking, jogging, Nordic walking, swimming and climbing stairs are particularly helpful.

A healthy and balanced diet can also have a positive impact by helping to reduce fat levels and prevent water retention. It is recommended to pay attention to a diet rich in nutrient-rich foods and limit the consumption of salty and sugary foods.

In our clinic in Zurich we offer two effective methods for the treatment of cellulite:

Laser lipolysis

  • Laser lipolysis, which we perform with SculpSure is a gentle alternative to traditional liposuction. With the help of a laser, excess fat cells under the skin are destroyed to reduce cellulite and tighten the skin at the same time. Depending on the extent of the cellulite, several treatments may be required and it can take several months to see the final results.

Acoustic Wave Therapy (AWT)

  • The AWT is used to treat cellulite on the legs, buttocks and upper arms. It can also be used for body shaping, for unfavorable fat deposits, to support weight reduction through tissue stimulation and lymphatic drainage as well as for stretch marks. The AWT can help to reduce hardening and fibrosis after liposuction. During laser lipolysis with SculpSure, we use the AWT also as a follow-up treatment to achieve optimum results.

Please note that treatment results may vary individually. Detailed consultation with our professional staff is important to determine the most appropriate treatment option for your specific situation.

Frequently asked questions

Cellulite Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect from cellulite treatment?

Cellulite is actually a physiological, i.e. normal condition of a woman's skin, mostly on the thighs and buttocks. There are mild forms, but also more severe, aesthetically disturbing manifestations. The treatment helps the connective tissue to return to its normal function and can thus reduce the manifestation of cellulite. We use AWT for the treatment, which stimulates remodeling processes in the skin in a series of eight treatments in optimally weekly applications, so that the results can improve in the months following the completion of the treatment. Drink plenty of water and walk a lot. Climbing stairs is an ideal support for the therapy.

How soon can I see results after a professional cellulite treatment?

Something is usually seen already after one treatment and especially you will have a very pleasant light feeling in your legs.

What aftercare is necessary after cellulite treatment and how can I maintain the smoothness of my skin?

We recommend skin nourishing creams and taking collagen products that we have on hand for you in the clinic to support the therapy.
