Couperose

What is couperose?

Couperose is a congenital vasodilatation that often occurs as the first stage of rosacea. It manifests itself through fine redness and general irritation of the skin, which usually occurs on the face. Couperose can be treated well with vascular lasers.

Symptoms

Couperose symptoms

Couperose, also known as copper rose, is a cosmetic term that describes redness and the formation of dilated veins on the face. It is particularly common on the cheeks, but can also occur on the nose, forehead and chin.

These symptoms can significantly affect the appearance of the skin and can also be interpreted as an early stage of rosacea (couperose and rosacea).

The first signs of couperose often become noticeable between the ages of 30 and 40 and intensify in the years that follow. Although couperose is harmless, many sufferers find the changes in their skin appearance cosmetically disturbing, especially if these redness and vascular dilatations also affect the décolleté.

Causes

Couperose causes

The causes of couperose are varied.

The main cause appears to be a genetic predisposition that favors a weakness of the connective tissue and thus the formation of couperose. This weakness means that women, especially those with sensitive skin, are affected more frequently than men.

In addition to this factor, environmental factors (changing temperatures, heat), psychological factors (stress) and external factors (alcohol, smoking) can promote the development by causing inflammation and congestion of the skin.

Treatment

Couperose treatment

There are several treatment options for removing couperose. Sunscreens and lotions are an important part of the treatment process. However, the most effective and long-lasting method for removing couperose is laser and light therapy.

We offer various methods for the treatment of couperosis in our clinic in Zurich:

Laser and light treatments

  • Laser therapy can improve the redness that occurs with couperose. Various vascular lasers are used for this purpose, including a long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser, an alexandrite laser, a 577 nm yellow laser, a IPL vascular laser (intense pulsed light) and a radio frequency device. Depending on your individual symptoms and skin condition, we will choose the right technique for your treatment. Couperose usually requires several treatment sessions. Initially, please plan three sessions at one-month intervals. We offer special package prices for this treatment plan.

Other treatments

  • To alleviate the symptoms of couperose, there are also a number of special skin care products, such as sun creams and lotions. These can have a positive effect on the hyperreactivity of the skin and are part of effective care for sensitive skin.
Frequently asked questions

Couperose Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to prevent couperose?

As there are many causes of couperose, complete prevention is difficult. However, one important provoking factor that you can control is UV light. Therefore, daily use of a sunscreen tailored to your skin type protects against the development of couperose.

What is the difference between rosacea and couperose?

Couperosis is the cosmetic term that describes the appearance of dilated veins on the face. Rosacea, on the other hand, is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that usually begins in middle age and also shows couperosis as one of its symptoms.

How many treatments are usually needed to get rid of couperose?

The number of treatments depends on the degree of manifestations. Depending on the findings, please count on one to three treatments. Make-up can be applied immediately after the treatment. At Hautwerk, we use a sunscreen makeup that makes you immediately socially acceptable.

What is the recovery time after couperose treatment?

For the first few days you must expect more facial redness. However, this is not problematic because can be covered with make-up.
