Botulinum toxin

"Botulinum toxin is a collective term for neurotoxic proteins. These "neurotoxins" have been used medically in minimal doses for decades, especially in aesthetic dermatology."

How it works

Botulinum toxin mode of action

Botulinum toxin type A, a product of the bacterium Clostridium botulinum, is an effective muscle relaxant. The active ingredient interrupts the transmission of stimuli from the nerves to the muscles, causing the muscles to relax and no longer tense. This effect leads to the smoothing of active wrinkles caused by frequent muscle contractions in the face, such as forehead wrinkles, crow's feet and frown lines. When used correctly, the special thing about botulinum toxin is that it has a targeted effect without affecting the natural facial expression. Another effective way of using botulinum toxin is to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis). When injected, the activity of the sweat glands is effectively blocked.

People often confuse botulinum toxin with fillers. Only so-called hyaluronic acid fillers are used to fill facial areas (including lips).

Treatment options

Botulinum toxin treatment options

Botulinum toxin can be used in various areas:

  • Mimic wrinkles: By relaxing the target muscles, facial wrinkles are visibly reduced and further wrinkling is prevented.
  • HyperhidrosisIt provides a long-lasting solution to excessive sweating by blocking the sweat glands in the treated areas.
  • Aesthetic contouringIn addition to reducing wrinkles, botulinum toxin can also help to recontour the face by relaxing specific muscle groups.
Procedure

Botulinum toxin procedure

Preparation for the treatment: Before the treatment, a detailed consultation is held with the doctor to clarify individual treatment goals and expectations. Patients should avoid blood-thinning medication and alcohol before treatment in order to minimize the risk of bruising. In our opinion, a consultation is essential for detailed clarification.

During the treatment: The treatment consists of targeted injections into the selected muscles. The procedure is quick and usually does not require anesthesia. An anesthetic cream can be used at the patient's request. Patients usually describe the sensation as only slightly burning.

After the treatment: Immediately after the injection, no massaging or strong physical activities should be performed on the treated areas in order not to change the destination of the active ingredient. The effect begins within four to seven days. The full effect is visible after two weeks. The results usually last up to six months. In the treatment of hyperhidrosis, the effect can even last up to nine months. After the effect of botulinum toxin has worn off, there is the option of a top-up treatment. This serves to maintain or optimize the desired results.

Frequently asked questions

Botulinum toxin Frequently asked questions

Is the treatment painful?

Botulinum toxin type A is injected directly into the area to be treated using a fine needle. Patients describe the pain caused by this as only a slight burning sensation. Before the treatment, the doctor may use a local anesthetic cream to reduce the burning sensation.

How long does it take until I see results?

An effect sets in after about four to seven days and the full effect is visible after a maximum of two weeks.

Are the results permanent, or will I have to undergo further treatments in the future?

The results of the treatment generally last three to six months, in the case of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) around six to nine months. If satisfied, the treatment can be repeated as required.

Will I need time off work?

As a rule, most people can quickly return to their normal activities after botulinum toxin treatment, including social interactions and, of course, everyday working life.
