Erbium laser

"The erbium laser (long Erbium:YAG laser) is a common Laser type, which is used to ablate superficial skin structures and lesions. Thus can for example aesthetically disturbing skin changes such as age-related warts can be removed or skin rejuvenation can be achieved with an Erbium Laser Peel."

How it works

Erbium laser mode of action

The erbium laser emits laser beams of wavelength 2940 nm. These cause the top layer of skin to heat up rapidly and vaporize immediately. As a result, ablation takes place without damaging underlying skin structures.

When using a fractional erbium laser, which is used for the erbium laser peel, microscopic holes are shot into the top layer of the skin using the same principle. This triggers the natural wound healing process and boosts the production of new collagen so that the skin is renewed. Treatment with the fractional Erbium:YAG laser is a recognized, low-complication, tissue-sparing method that involves few risks.

For the removal of Age warts or xanthelasma, the same laser is used in a different mode. Since we are ablating the entire surface here, it requires a pre-anesthetic as a cream or as an injection. Since in this case the epidermis is "shot away" over the entire surface, a longer healing time must be expected. On the face, 7-10 days are usually sufficient; on the body, scabbing must be expected for about 3 weeks. We therefore recommend this treatment in the colder season, as swimming and sunbathing must be avoided.

Preparation for the treatment

Before a Erbium laser treatment it is important to prepare the skin optimally for the procedure to ensure pain-free treatment. This begins with the application of an anesthetic to the area of skin to be treated. This is applied/injected locally to ensure that the treatment is as comfortable as possible. Unlike CO2 lasers, which can affect deeper layers of the skin, the Erbium laser aims to renew the skin more precisely and gently. It is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and keep the skin clean before laser treatment.

What happens during the treatment?

Erbium laser treatment begins after the anesthetic cream has been successfully applied. Depending on the size of the area to be treated, the session can last between 10 and 60 minutes. The laser works by selectively ablating the uppermost layers of the skin, resulting in new skin formation and improved texture. Compared to CO2 lasers the Erbium laser offers finer control over the depth of treatment, making it ideal for superficial skin layers.

After the treatment: what you can expect

The skin may be slightly reddened after the treatment. In the first 48 hours, it is important not to cover the treated skin with make-up and to keep it clean. The aftercare products we recommend should be used strictly as directed, especially in the first 4-6 weeks. The skin must be protected from the sun every day with a sun cream with a high protection factor. Direct exposure to the sun should be avoided. This careful aftercare is crucial to ensure optimal results and to support the skin during the healing process.

Frequently asked questions

Erbium laser Frequently asked questions

Which skin conditions can be treated with erbium laser therapy?

Disturbing and protruding skin tags that are not moles can be removed very precisely with the Erbium laser. These can be age-related warts (seborrhoeic keratoses), genital warts (condylomas), xanthelasma (cholesterol deposits on the eyes), hypertrophic sebaceous glands or cornification disorders. The erbium laser is also used in rejuvenation (rejuvenation treatment) as well as in the treatment of genitourethral syndrome of the menopause (vaginal laser).

Is the treatment painful?

The treatment is generally not painful, as the skin is desensitized either with an anaesthetic cream or with a local anaesthetic, in which case the injection of the local anaesthetic is felt similar to a mosquito bite.

How long does it take until I see results?

The result is immediately visible. However, the area may appear red for some time or darken later. Superficial wounds, similar to an abrasion, appear in the area where the skin has been removed and require special aftercare. Appropriate care and consistent sun protection are therefore extremely important. It should be noted that in rare cases spots (reddish, whitish, brownish) may appear as a result of the removal. Unfortunately, these can persist in individual cases. Scarring is also possible in rare cases. If the areas do not heal as expected, please report this to the practice, as any scars can still be improved.

Are the results permanent or will I have to undergo further treatments in the future?

Ablated means removed. The erbium laser "condemns" unwanted tissue so that the result is permanent and cannot be reversed.

Will I need time off work?

You can go about your usual activities immediately after the treatment and return to work straight away. However, depending on what is removed and where, more extensive aftercare or pain may occur, so you should leave some time and space for skin care. In particular, swimming pools and saunas are not recommended until healing is complete.
