Acne

Acne treatment in Zurich

Acne, pimples and pustules on the face, back and chest often occur during puberty, but also in adulthood. If the inflammation is severe, it can lead to unsightly scars.

Modern dermatological acne treatments are often a relief for those affected. In our practice, we use light therapy, cosmetic cleansing and peelings to treat acne in addition to traditional therapies with creams and tablets.

Symptoms

Acne symptoms

Not all acne is the same.

There are different types of acne with different symptoms, and the success of treatment depends on the correct diagnosis.

Acne vulgaris

  • The most common form of the is Acne vulgaris, it results from hormone-related changes during puberty. The symptoms can be treated well and usually disappear on their own. Acne vulgaris is divided into three degrees of severity:
    • Acne comedonica manifests itself as blackheads, which mostly appear on the face.
    • Acne papulo-pustulosa forms inflamed papules and pustules in addition to blackheads. The form often appears on the face, back and in men additionally on the chest area.
    • Acne conglobata is the most severe form. Here, the pimples develop into nodules, which can become severely inflamed and leave scars. Severe acne conglobata is called acne fulminans: Here, in addition to the skin symptoms, the affected patient has additional whole-body symptoms like those of the flu: fever, bone pain, and a general feeling of illness.

Acne aestivalis

  • Acne aestivalis is a type of acne disease caused by UV radiation. The UV light releases substances in the skin that cause inflammation when combined with sunscreen, makeup or sebum.

Acne inversa

  • Acne inversa (also hidradenitis suppurativa) is a severe, chronic skin inflammation.
Causes

Acne causes

Acne is caused by genetic and hormonal factors, but as with many skin conditions, lifestyle can also play a role.

Androgens

  • Androgens, i.e. the male sex hormones, lead to increased sebum production, which promotes clogging of the pores and the formation of acne. Since the hormones change especially during puberty, acne often occurs in this phase of life and affects men significantly more often.

Genetics

  • Genetic factors play a role in almost all diseases and acne is no exception. An inherited cornification disorder can cause blockages and inflammation, thereby promoting the development of acne.

Lifestyle

  • An unhealthy lifestyle with excessive nicotine consumption, stress and UV light are also conducive to the development of acne. Sugar consumption and skim milk products also have a negative influence.
Treatment

Acne treatment

At our clinic, we treat acne according to the latest guidelines.

Medication is available in various forms, from ointments to tablets. Effective active ingredients such as antibiotics, retinoids, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide can inhibit inflammation and fight the bacteria that cause acne.

However, the success of the treatment depends on many factors and, in addition, traditional acne treatments are not suitable or sufficiently effective for everyone and in every situation (e.g. during pregnancy).

We have therefore expanded our range of treatments with light therapies since 2016:

Light treatments

  • TheKleresca® Bio-Photonic Acne Therapywe use for moderate to severe inflammatory acne. The treatment consists of a series of 12 treatments in 6 weeks and can also be useful in isotretinoin therapy at the beginning to reduce the known initial aggravation.
  • At theCelluma LED Therapythree different wavelengths are used, which have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. We recommend a 25-minute treatment 2-3 times a week for 4-6 weeks.

Other treatments

  • Cosmetics for acne must be used with caution. Removal of pimples should be performed only by professionals. With a Fruit acid peeling incl. manual cleansing, acne can still often be effectively reduced.
  • After the inflammation has subsided, unsightly Acne scars remain. These can also be effectively removed using various methods, such as the CO2 Laser, are treated.

Frequently asked questions

Acne Frequently Asked Questions

How soon will I see results from acne treatment?

For the treatment of acne, there are many very good topical medications available, as well as medications in tablet form. For the treatment there are guidelines that have studied the best procedure for each type of acne. In the first two weeks, the skin has to get used to the new acne therapy. Antibiotics have the fastest immediate results, but they are not useful because of resistance developments and the lack of long-lasting success. So you need some patience. We usually do a check-up after six weeks, where you can then easily see the effects on the clogged pores with the help of our high-resolution photos.

What kind of aftercare is needed after acne treatment, and how can I maintain the health of my skin?

Acne treatment must always be long-term. Expect at least six months, but sometimes years. The therapy is always accompanied by sensible care products, which the doctors choose with you. Once the acne has settled down, a switch is made to so-called qualified care.
